"actor"/"actress"

some job titles have both a masculine form and a feminine form: actor/actress, waiter/waitress, god/goddess. if you notice, the masculine form is simply a verb with -er at the end, while the feminine form uses -ess. most job titles just use the -er form. does that make those job titles sexist? only if we assume the -er form is exclusively masculine.

the -ess form also doesn't really make sense; you wouldn't call a female skater a "skatress", or a female lawyer a "lawyeress". if someone wants to be called an "actress", or a "waitress", it's not that big of a deal, but using those terms by default seems wrong.Â
